Can I use the Western Digital My Book Essentials to back up 2 computers?

Q. Bought a WD 1TB a while ago to back up my sch laptop (Windows.) My Macbook can read/write on the NTFS My Book with NTFS-3G and MacFuse. But can I use the Western Digital My Book Essentials to back up 2 computers?

Yes, of course. The hardware will work fine on each machine as long as you keep it NTFS.
