You can request a free CD from Edubuntu, Ubuntu, or Kubuntu, but they take like 4 weeks to deliver.
If you want Solaris you they will be delivered in 2-5 Days in the U.S.

You can have Ubuntu shipped to you for free. Go to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu

Go to your local mega-bookstore and check for Linux publications in the MAGAZINE section. There are several European mags (Linux Format and Linux Magazine=Linux Pro Magazine in the US) and there are some US-specific mags as well, and they have DVDs with the mags. Problem, you need a dvd reader to use them. Linux Pro Magazine put out an Ubuntu Special Edition just this month, with DVD. Linux Format has a 6 flavor *buntu DVD this month. You might be intersted in the Xubuntu version.

You can also check OpenSuSE which has an installer. (minimum download size). Once installed, it will download what it needs. It’s about a CD size.

Other distributions, like ubuntu have good distributions. You might find a friend who has a fast connection and download it with them.
