How Do I Get My Seagate Freeagent Desktop External Hard Drive To Read On My Computer?

Q. I am using a Dell, running Windows XP. I recently moved and had to disconnect my computer and everything else to transport it. For some reason, the Seagate drive is not seen on my computer. The light comes on and stays on regardless if the computer is on or off, but that’s about it. When I plug in the power source, I hear it and feel it working, but after that, it just stops. I just bought this drive in February. Anyone able to help me? Please.

When you (disconnect and) connect the USB cable from your desktop to you hear the normal sounds.
    You should hear the sound:
C:WINDOWSMediaWindows XP Hardware Insert.wav when you connect the drive’s USB cable. If you have the Device Manager open, it should update to show the new USB device.
    C:WINDOWSMediaWindows XP Hardware Remove.wav
when you disconnect the USB cable. If you have the Device Manager open, it should update to reflect the deletion of the new USB device from the hardware list.
If you hear the hardware failure sound as found in C:WINDOWSMediaWindows XP Hardware Fail.wav, you have a hardware issue. If you hear nothing at all, check that the USB cable hasn’t broken by using a different cable. Also try a different USB port (such as the ones on the back of the computer if you were using a USB port on the front panel).

The Seagate FreeAgent drives come with a full 5-year warranty. I’d suggest first checking your warranty status at http://support.seagate.com/customer/warranty_validation.jsp, and then contacting customer service at http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/warranty_&_returns_assistance/.
I’ve been involved in the FreeAgent community forums, and from what I’ve seen, Seagate has definitely put out higher-quality drives than these.

Yes I had that happen to me, I resolved it by changing the usb 4 port hub. It was faulty, try bringing up the logical drive manager,Control panel /Administrative Tools/Computer Management./Disk Management. This shows all the drives attached to your computer, try changing the usb from front to back or visa versa , and see if the drive appears.

Does the drive require driver support to run? In some cases you have to install the driver before connecting and running the device.
