How Do I Install An Nvidia Driver Without Restarting Ubuntu?

Q. I’m running Ubuntu 9.04 and I am attempting to install an nVidia driver without having to restart because, obviously, then I’ll lose all data. I do not have permission to install it on the hard drive, even if I dual-boot and this motherboard won’t boot from a flash drive. I want to be able to use Desktop Effects, but I am having troubles. Best answer will get a guaranteed 5 stars.

I don’t know what your talking about, the losing data thing. You can try logging out, but it’s the same thing as restarting, only takes less time.
Umm…you wont lose your data if you restart, or maybe theres something that you didn’t mention.

Logging out and Logging back in works just fine. I always do this when running a LiveCD session
