How Do I Keep My Western Digital Mybook External Drive From Spinning Down Between Accesses?

Q. How do I keep my Western Digital MyBook Essential 500GB External drive from spinning down constantly? WD’s website says this feature is built in and can’t be changed, but there’s got to be a third party utility that will fix this. It is causing a huge lag whenever I want to save/access anything since I use the entire WD drive AS my My Documents folder. Any ideas?

The spin down is built into the drive and does not take effect until the drive has not been accessed for some time.
I have 2 of these on my PC and it’s quite a long wait before they spin down, but then the shortened life of the drives if they didn’t is NOT to my mind worth the second or two it takes to spin up again, so I’d say live with it, or save your documents on an internat drive and back them up to the WD Mybook

umm, download a hdd stress test?
