How easy is it to detect if someone downloaded any spyware software on your computer?

Q. I need to track my teen’s activity on the computer, but i worry that my son might detect it- he is quite computer savvy. Would any of thos anti virus/spyware programs detect it if he run a check?

Step up and be a parent. It’s your duty to track his usage and make sure he’s not getting into danger online. If he doesn’t like it, then don’t let him use the computer.

Also, that’s not the correct definition for “spyware”. You are talking about parental monitoring software. Anti-spyware programs will detect parental monitoring software, but they have been “whitelisted” and are seen as safe (no alerts will be raised).

There are some monitoring programs that strive to run in a “stealth” mode. No program goes completely noticed, but they do try hard to be undetectable.

But who cares. Even if your teen finds it, it can’t be uninstalled unless his account has administrator privileges. If his account is set up as “limited”, he cannot add admin privileges himself, he would need your password.

Make sure he understands that he is a teen, and that you are his parent. When it comes to computer usage, you are boss. If he doesn’t accept that, then revoke his computer privilege.
