How good is a Nvidia GeForce 8600M both now and in the future?

Q. I am deciding between two laptops. I like them both very much but the graphics card vary on both.

1. Dell XPS M1710 with a Nvidia Geforce 7950 GTX
2. Hewlett Packard Pavilion Dv9590 with a Nvidia GeForce 8600M

I know that the 7950 is a much much better card but i am a very keen gamer and i want a card that will please me in the future too. The 8600 has DirectX10 but the 7950 doesn’t.

I really dont know what to go for, on one hand i dont want to be stuck with the 7950 that will play amazing now but nothing in the future due to no DX10 support. I know the 8600 is a good card now, but what will it be like in terms of DX10. If its only ‘good’ (rather than great) for DX9 will it be an average card supporting DX10?

I don’t understand how it works!
Im really stuck! Please help!

its medium powered and it should do for awhile … by the time dx10 games become mainstream the 8600 wont be worth diddly .. i would just get a 7950 or 8800gts and dont worry about it .. they will be fine for awhile ..

the #1 laptop would be better, the 8600m is not a good idea.
