I’m Having Issues With A 1 Tb My Book Essential Edition Western Digital Hard Drive. What Do I Do?

Q. I am running vista home premium 32 bit. I seems to recognize the drive but when I try to open it, windows explorer stops responding. the Western digital site is no help and the drive did not come with a cd or dvd with drivers. Please Help!

    Hmm… Has the drive worked before?
    If it’s brand new, you may need to initialize it and format it althought most USB drives come preformatted but usually it’s FAT32 format which is not ideal for Windows.
    If the drive worked before, I suspect that the file system is damaged on the hard drive. Check the windows system event logs for “disk” or ntfs errors [right mouse click on Computer on the start menu, select Manage. when the Computer Management console opens, left click to right facing triangle on Event Viewer. Click the right facing triangle on Windows Logs. Left click on System.
    Scroll down the list and look for disk related errors. If you see some, your drive’s file system is probably damaged.
    You can try to recover the data using a data recovery tool such as Restorer 2000 or send it to company for data recover (very expensive).
