What are the down sides of hibernating your computer overnight?
Q. My computer takes a long time to start up and hibernating is way faster but is it okay to hibernate your computer overnight?
Some people say it will make your computer slower or even automatically lock your computer with a random password that you can’t log in.
Once I hibernated for a over like 6 hours and it says that resuming hibernation failed and had to restart the computer. Is it because I hibernated the computer too long?

its best just to put it to sleep. all those problems that you mention aren’t normal. if that happens then there is something wrong with your computer.
putting it to sleep saves energy and reduces the wear on your computer.
I will answer your first question and then give you some good advice to solve your problem a different way.
Hibernating or leaving your computer on for a long time is VERY bad for it. Your computer is running hundreds of different programs all at once, even if you’re not using any of them at the time. Over time, small errors can begin to occur within these programs causing your computer to slow down and not work properly. Turning off or restarting your computer resets these programs so that they work better. Also, it can simply wear out the fan or electrical component in your machine.

(BTW, I’m assuming you’re using Windows XP)
after reading some of the answers, yes and no. first we need to understand what hibernating is.
When you hibernate a computer you simply save everything on the RAM onto your hard drive so that when you press the power button it simply loads back exactly what was on the screen when you pressed hibernate.
Problems with hibernating: if your hard drive is going bad then the data can be corrupted and your computer will ultimately fail when it tries to reload or unhibernate if you will.
basically the only thing that could go wrong is somewhere between the RAM and the hard drive, and if your RAM is messed up your computer will tell you about it in a hurry. so either you have a problem with your hard drive or motherboard, but the motherboard is a long shot. on the bright side. hard drives are cheap.
There really is no downside to Hibernating its just that even with it you still need to occasionally shut down the computer, i recommend shutting it down whenever you have time to wait for it to boot up the next time you use the computer.
Random password changes is hogwash.
Assuming all components are within acceptable tolerances, hibernation is a fine way to ‘shut down’ for moderate, to extended periods.
