Why can’t my Macbook write to a Western Digital Passport hard drive?

Q. I have a 120GB Western Digital Passport external USB hard Drive that I was using with a PC. I’m also trying to use it with my new Macbook. The Macbook reads the files on the drive but I can’t write from the Macbook to the drive. Any ideas?

Make sure that the drive is formatted at FAT32.

Is it formatting to FAT32? This should allow you to use it between Mac & Windows. (I think…)

This is probably because the passport drive is formatted using NTFS file system (which is a windows file system).

If you need to use the drive on a pc and apple system.. you will have to re-format the drive using FAT32 file system (which is compatible with both windows and apple).

    hope this helps :)

As mentioned above it is most likely the format of the drive. To format the drive for use on a mac, go into disk utility and click the format, MS DOS, then click erase. You will erase the entire drive so back up any information you have on it. See an article about it here: http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/partitioning_tiger.html
