It sounds like your hard drive has become corrupt or your BIOS has been reset. First, go into BIOS and make sure that your primaty hard drive (the one with windows on it) is set to the default boot device (you get into BIOS by pressing ‘del to enter setup’). Save and reboot. If that doesnt work then your hard drive boot sector has probably become corrupt: try doing a system repair with the Windows XP setup disk (just make sure you do the REPAIR option or you risk wiping the hard drive). This problem is fixable, but if you are not exactly tech savy you may wish to have a professional fix it for you.
That means take off the side of your computer and remove the tape wire eid off the hdd. Turn on computer let it do what it must then shut it off. replace the wire tape to the hdd and turn back on, it should work then. For some reason it looses its connection.
edit: been there, done that
You boot up software is not functioning normally. Most likely, the boot sectors (software code) contains a bad disk location/s causing the incomplete operation of the boot software. Sometime, re-boot the computer will resolve the problem. Or you can use the safe mode to bring the computer up.
