The only disadvantage to running nvidia boards with ATI, is if you want to crossfire later on, which will not be an issue in your case, as you only have 1 PCIEx16 slot anyways. To answer your other question about smoothness. Smoothness all depends upon the card, drivers, games you play, and patch releases for those games. 4670 and 3870 cards are solid workhorses of cards, but you have to remember that they are not cutting edge and will show you that in their performance vs. a 4870 ATI or a 260GTX nvidia, which those two cards you mentioned will smash them in performance. My thoughts are go with what you can afford, as the 4870 and 260 will both require you to change your power supply. If you can afford a $50 PSU and a 4870 go for it by all means, it will serve you well. If you aren’t ready for that step, then the two you have chosen will fit the bill… Also consider a 4830 as they are a little stronger but cost in the $120 range…

Ah, There are so many pros and cons about compatibility.
Yes it will work but it won’t be as great as performance as if a Nvidia Graphics Card. Usually if you want a great computer you would follow it’s recommended requirements.
As well for PCI Express 2.0. You put a PCI-E 2.0 card on a PCI-E 1 slot, it’ll still work but with less performance than a recommended PCI-E 2.0 Slot.
So go ahead, but it’s recommended you either find another that is actually compatible for great performance and quality.

    Other than the bottleneck of a PCI-E 2.0 on a PCI-E v1.0 x16 slot. I don’t see any problems with it.

It will run but it wont have that great advantage.. :P If you got 2 cards one ATI and one NVIDIA and there the same ,cause of your MOBO its atleast a 20% advantage.
