How do you set up a network for two laptops to share an Internet connection?

Q. Our cable Internet connection was set up on my laptop. I then bought a wireless router. I have an HP running Windows VISTA. My roommate has a Dell laptop about four years old running Windows XP. She wants to connect to the Internet. I have a wireless network set up for the router. What does she need to do? She tried going under “Connect to” and no wireless networks showed up.

    Hi Amanda,

Theres a lot of things that we need to consider. Distance of your room mate’s pc is important. ( try to check if you are able to detect it when your wireless router is near to it. Also you might as well check if theres an error message. With winxp it will give you this error message : Wndows cannot configure…. blah blah… Go to advanced settings , then wireless properties and enable “let windows configure your wireless connection” (dell has its own wireless client -built-in). Then try again. let me know and feel free to email me and il get back at you asap.

    Good luck !

I hate to sate the obvious, but you need to read the wireless router’s manual, and follow it to set up friend’s maching.

There’s too much detail to go into here. If you are not broadcasting your network name (which you shouldn’t be, for security reasons) then she is going to have to specify the network manually by the name you gave it — and then she will need the WEP or WPA security key that you created when you set up the router.

None of us know those names or passwords, these are things that you should have written down in your router;s instruction manual when you set it up.
