Which is the best place to keep the wireless ADSL router at home to get BEST coverage ?

Q. .

I am using a UTSTAR adsl wireless router modem with BSNL broad band service in India.

To get a good coverage where should I place the wireless router.

Please let me know the best location at home.

Higher place is better ?
Should I avoid placing it over a steel cup·board or cabinet.?

Also DOs and DON’Ts while placing it.

The best place is in the middle of the computers that you are connecting to it. If this isn’t possible however, the best place is in the middle of your house. Avoid placing the router too close to any metal or thick walls, as these will lower the range of the signal. Ensure the aerials are pointing directly upwards, as this allows them to spread the signal evenly.

And yes, avoid the steel cabinet as the metal will absorb some of the signal.

Keep it central to your house, and away from any walls. If you have a cordless telephone, or a microwave, i would suggest keeping it away from either of these too. They can both operate in the same frequency range as the wireless spectrum.
Placing it on a steel cabinet will probably make your reception worse, as it would stop the signal from travelling through efficiently.

My router is Located in the Central part of the house, for common sense sake, that way I can get an over all decent coverage no matter where I am inside. Plus try to avoid placing your Router near the Base of a Wireless Phones or anything wireless of that nature due to some possible interference with the signal. And if you have a two story house, place the router in the lower level, since router wireless signals work upwards.

    Hope this helps.

It doesn’t really matter what brand it is there are a lot of general rules of thumb for positioning a wireless router.
    - keep it where it will get some air flow to keep from overheating
    - Putting it high is a good idea and keeping it from being blocked by metal will help.
    - test it, sometimes you can get better reception from a lower of different location. I have mine in the basement and it works well.

It really all depends on your situation, what the house is made from and other environmental issues. It may work well on top of the metal cabinet because something else is counteracting the cabinet and if you have metal studs or lath in the wall that may be worse even if you put it on top of a wooden cabinet. Test it by moving it around and moving around your home with your laptop.
