I can wirelessly connect to my adsl modem to access the net, how do you use patchcables to do the same thing?

Q. At the moment i’m connected to the net using my wireless dongle, however some time the signal drops out. I would like to connect to my adsl modem using patch cables. I’m using winxp, what configarations do i need to change with in xp to allow me to access the net using patch cables instead of wireless?
Oh, just wondering, what the difference between an adsl modem and an adsl router?

Plug one end of a cat 5 straight through cable into your pc’s network card, and plug another into a free port on the adsl router.
The network adapter on the pc should be configured for dhcp, which it is by default.

An adsl router routes traffic between 2 networks, ie the LAN and the WAN.
The adsl modem doesnt, but negotiates the connection between you and the dsl provider
