Problem with my Western Digital 1000GB My book Studio edition external hard drive?

Q. i have bought a new WD external hard drive last week and i want to know if i should format the hard first or not?
because as i plug it to my laptop you can’t browse the hard. it seems there is no partition on it.
and also there is no explanation in its box. it is seems it should be as easy as a pie to connect a new hard drive but i doubt if i should format it.
my hard is a “Western Digital 1000GB My book Studio edition external” one !

You need to partition and format it, be aware however, a 32bit OS, can only access 137Gb of hard drive space. However if you have a 64bit OS, then it can access petabytes of hard drive space.

I believe SP3 addresses the problem.
