@Tayclamation yeah if it has extra ports on your router for the ethernet cable to go in, you wud usually need one for the internet another for maybe if you have a desk top? and one more for the xbox360. unless you have a wireless router, you would need to by a wi-fi network adapter that is an extension for your xbox360, usually ps3s already have that (wireless wifi) in the console =] hope that helps

hi, is it me or you are describing a switch? a router routes network packets between two or more different sub-nets as far as i know? i think these are switch + router + all the rest ( firewall etc ) and they are commonly called ROUTERS, but i respectfully disagree with your definition of a router. what do you think? thanks!

@theali9612 The difference between a modem and a router is the functionality of the device. Modems, (DSL or dial-up) usually have limited functionality and only connect you directly to the Internet or network. They mostly just convert analog signals to digital and vice-versa. Routers on the other hand, are able to control the flow of traffic by their IP addresses and also “inspect” network data or “packets” to manage the network more efficiently. Most routers have a built in modem.

If you wish to go online i.e. access the internet via your PSP then you need to connect to a router that has access to an Internet connection. The point I was making which people seem to have missed is that you can still “communicate” between two computers virtual or otherwise without the need for a router. I never mentioned the internet. Crossover cables will do the trick of if you have 1 or more virtual computers on your phyical PC you can use network bridges and virtual switches.

yes it possible. for example say you have a computer with windows 2000 or high (much easier) that has a wireless card. it picks up a connections and you can use internet sharing on that wireless card to share the connection with either another wireless card or a wired connection

Sorry but him saying at the start that you MUST have a router in order to communicate between computers is untrue, virtual switches make this possible. Remember, the computer IS the network.. Sorry for the rant as I know a lot of noobs are commenting here. If anyone would like a better explanation the buzz me.. :-)

a modem is just an interface to bring the public line to your house

a router is a smart device that routes information in the best possible path

a hub is a device that just takes a signal and sends it to all clients, regardless of if its the destination

a switch is a device that provides point to point connectivity, it’s smarter than a switch
