can anybody recommend a good quality scanner?

I would suggest the new HP G-4010 which can scan legal size (up to 14″) documents. The resolution is 9600 which is MORE than adequate. I use it professionally in our Magazine department to scan in photo shoots of models.
Here is the lonk. It is inexpensive and very well rated. You can even scan directly to a pdf file whcih makes it easier to assemble especially if you want to keep each lessons separate.
