It’s a stupid blunder I made. Perhaps it doesn’t even have anything to do with it.
There was a Dell Driver CD that had the program Sonic RecordNow on it, and I wanted that program on my laptop as well. So I put in the CD and installed RecordNow. I pressed the power button to turn it off, not the healthy choice, I know.
When I turned it back on, and it went to the Start up screen (Windows XP), -all- the text had been changed into some kind of font that used symbols. EVery last bit of text, even when you log on. I’ve tried restarting properly, I even got rid of the program. Please tell me what to do, this laptop isn’t even fully mine.
I’m completely desperate.

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA Mode
Last Known Good Configuration
Directory Services Restore Mode
Debugging Mode
Diable automatic restart on system failure
Start Windows Normally
and Reboot

I tried a few of these, including Safe Mode, and I have no idea how to do a system restore.
