The best way to get rid of spyware is to use these two free programs: MalwareBytes and Spybot Search and Destroy.
In my opinion Malwarebytes is one of the best free Antispyware programs out there. Download the free version, install it, let it download updates, click Full System Scan (takes about 1 hour), and click Remove Infections. Run the program again and click remove infections just for good measure. That will remove most of your infections. http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Next run Spybot Search and Destroy. Download it here: networking.org/en/download/index.html, install, click search for updates, download updates, click search for problems. This scan will take about 1 hour, click remove problems when it’s done. Click the Immunize tab and click Immunize to prevent further infections.
If you don’t have an Antivirus program I recommend Avast. It’s free and takes up very little memory on your computer. http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

We could start reading the privacy polices of the software and websites we download.
Reject policies and terms of use agreements that force us to give up Constitutional rights and hold software creators harmless for the damage they do.
Ban together as internet users and petition Congress for hardcore privacy laws that make spam,viruses,and malware illegal and punishable by law.
Aggressively enforce such laws.
Most of the other answers on this question are defensive,but I say we should say “enough is enough” and go on the OFFENSIVE!

I would say – Get Lavasoft adware free edition and install it. Spybot is also another good software. I have reviewed these software in my website. Hope this helps
Spyware and Malware are only problems if you find yourself clicking on ads and downloading programs that are not open source, or you have no idea what something is and you just install it. If you have Windows 7 or Vista, IE explorer is actually a pretty secure browser, so you literally have to click “Allow” for almost ANYTHING to be installed.
Another easy step to fight malware and spyware is by opening msconfig. You can control what programs start with your computer. A good rule to follow is to deactivate any program that isn’t created by “Microsoft” or the company that made your hardware.
One free solution to browse the web spyware and malware free would be to download the newest form of Ubuntu or Kubuntu 9.10(both forms of Linux) as an ISO and burn it to a DVD for a free bootable live disk that you can try without even fully installing!

Don’t do online banking. Don’t install any software that banks tell you to because the viruses target computers with those viruses imho.
