    Purchase Norton 360 from symnatec (subscription for a year) and you will be completely safe.
    its a cd you buy and install witht the product key, can use in up to three pcs, and it costs like 70 dollars for a full year protection, and is totally worth it, every penny.

    I use a combo of 3 programs: Spyware Blaster, Malwarebytes, and Spybot Search & Destroy. The key is to do frequent scans & use the programs’ “immunization” features to prevent infection.

    Also, be careful of which sites you visit. Some sites are typically okay, such as Yahoo, Amazon, etc. But be leery of unfamiliar websites & especially be careful when downloading stuff from unfamiliar websites.

    By not being an idiot online. No, seriously. I have no protection on my computer whatsoever and have never had any, and I don’t get these issues because I know how to use the Internet.

    I work in technical support and the only people who get spyware and malware are people who either 1) visit a lot of porn sites or 2) Don’t know anything about computers and do stupid things.

    Also, if you use Firefox instead of internet explorer and use the add-ons Adblock Plus, Noscript, TACO and WOT, you will also go a long way towards being safe even if you don’t know what you’re doing. (As well as blocking all annoying banner ads on websites.)

    biggest thing is to make sure your computer is kept upto date in terms of microsoft, antivirus and antimalware updates.

    most infections seem to come through the web today as browsers with outdated security offer little protection against things such as CoolWebSearch and security malware

    Anti Virus and Anti Spyware is half of the solution. Internet users need to be taught to identify which are good links or downloads and which might be harmful.

    Do not buy an Apple product. They tout the fact they are “immune” to viruses, but this is funny because its only because they don’t have a very popular OS. There are LOTS of “Mac” viruses. They just aren’t as common as viruses of the “PC” variety, because well, everyone who’s tried both knows Macs SUCK and just cannot compete. There is NOTHING a Mac can do that a PC can’t do, better. Prove me wrong.

    If you’re busy, lazy, not concerned with costs, or you view/download a lot of pornography, you should consider investing in one of the all-in-one solutions. These are generally referred to as “anti-virus software,” but this term is misleading. Few for-pay security applications do only anti-virus. They typically offer anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-spyware, firewall, phishing filter, e-mail scanning, identity protection/password storage, and various other features by product. Such products include:
    - AVG Internet Security (currently 9.0 – $55US/year)
    - Avast! Internet Security (currently 5.0 – $60US/year)
    - Norton 360 (currently 3.0 – $80US/year)
    - McAfee Total Protection (currently 2010 – $60US/year)
    The prices are rounded, see sources at the end for links.

    For the typical user, I would suggest free alternatives to those outrageously priced security suites mentioned above. A few utilities you should have in your arsenal:
    - Free anti-virus from Avast! or AVG
    - Malware scanner Spybot Search & Destroy or Malwarebytes
    - System cleaning by Glary Utilities (WARNING: avoid registry cleaning unless you know what you’re doing)
    See sources at the end for links.

    ~~~ Protecting Yourself Manually ~~~
    I agree with Mediocre Deity. I’m pretty good with computers and I don’t have any anti-virus or anti-spyware systems on my computer at all. If you know what you’re doing and how to avoid malware, all those things do is slow down your system. The following tips can be followed with or without security software. All software I suggest here is free.
    - Replace Internet Explorer with Mozilla Firefox and install the Adblock Plus addon
    - enable Windows firewall (this is on by default, but is disabled by other third-party firewalls/security suites) I actually use Sygate Personal Firewall. Sygate was purchased by Symantec and quickly shut down this awesome free software, but it’s still available for download on external sites. This program allows manual control over all ports and applications and is very user/gamer friendly.
    - Don’t ever, ever open spam! Sneaky programmers can build viruses into images, sounds, or attachments. If you don’t know who it’s from, delete it. Opening e-mails in the preview pane in programs like Outlook is the same thing, you’d be surprised how many people don’t realize this.
    - If you don’t understand a question, the answer is NO! This is the number one reason people get infected, they allow things that shouldn’t be allowed. NO, you don’t want to install this add-on. NO, you don’t want continue running this page with errors. NO, you don’t want to install this software.
    - When a pop-up appears, click the X, not the okay or close buttons. Just because a button says close, doesn’t mean it’s not going to make the window disappear and install the malware anyway.
    - If you think you’re infected, address the problem immediately. Just like disease in your own body, catch it early and kill it completely; don’t “take care of it later.”
    - Toolbars are evil: there is no excuse you can offer me in the world to make me install a third-party toolbar into my browser. Doing so is like saying “yes, you can have free reign over my computer.” The Yahoo! toolbar may be safe, but it’s entirely unnecessary. If a hacker decides to install a virus via the Yahoo! toolbar and you have it on your computer, you deserve it.
    - Avoid anything illegal – a person who creates viruses also steals software, music, and movies. And for some reason it seems they find ecstasy in combining the two, even though it discourages n00b seeding (shame on you morons)
    - Understand malware – In my experience, any problem experienced by a non-savvy user is a “virus.” Learn to identify typical Windows problems, and how to distinguish them from infection of spyware, bloatware, keyloggers, rootkits, viruses, worms, and trojans. If you’re gonna protect yourself manually you should know all these terms, what they are, and how to avoid all of them.
    DISCLAIMER – Not all people who pirate are devious, but hackers are. I do not condone running your machine without anti-virus unless you are a seriously advanced user. You know who you are.
