what is the best way to educate drivers not to risk a ticket by having stuff on the care rear mirror?

Joseph D asks,
I just got a 100+ dollar ticket from PA State Trooper Warnick for having my father’s string tie on the mirror. I had no idea that this was against the law and apparently 30% of the other drives are unaware that they could be ticketed. I have handed out 300 warning cards to people who have stuff in their windows. But I’m only one person, what is the best way to to get all the drivers to know this basic law. I think the police love it. I think it is a great way to bond with us and see what else is wrong with our car and credentials. I think that they would like the public not to know. But the bottom line is, how do we let all drivers know? Could the power company put on their bills..
Driving with stuff in your window is dangerous and will get you a 100 dollar ticket? Seems strange that something this basic
is allowed to remain a very unknown law. Everyone I speak to is amazed and thanks me for telling them. So if I can warn 300 people why not the police?

I don’t know anyone who has ever gotten a ticket for having something around their mirror, but it is extremely dangerous. People who have large things hanging from their mirror (leis are real popular with the teenage girls here) are creating a large blind spot in their windshield. Handing out 300 cards will reach more than 300 people. One person reads it an will most likely tell someone else….espically if it’s not common knowledge. You may want to print up some flyers to hand out to people at the driving schools. When kids are first learning to drive they tend to talk a lot about it and it’s information that will probably get around quickly. You may also want to contact your local police stations and explain you find getting this information out a good cause and see what sort of public service info you can get out there. Good luck

When you get your drivers license, you study for a drivers test. It is your responsibility to study the drivers handbook and learn the rules about maintaining a safe vehicle as well as operating one.

If you would really like to get the word out to others about that safety issue, I would suggest that you talk to your local tv or radio station. They have to allocate a certain amount of time each month for Public Service Announcements, and could make that issue one of the PSA’s that they broadcast.

I can’t believe you got a ticket for that. That trooper most have just worked an accident where that was a contributing factor. But yes, it is against the law most places.

As for letting people know. Most states have their statues online or at the library. It is the population’s job to educate themselves about the laws their representatives have passed.
