Signs of a corrupt tcpip.sys

I have come accross several cases of a corrupted or missing tcpip.sys file in the past few weeks, possibly the result of a failed windows update or third party software install.
While easy to repair, this problem can have massive impacts on a system, virtually severing all levels of network connectivity.
Symptoms
- "unable to query host name" being generated when issuing the ipconfig command
- The network status constantly showed "Network cable unplugged"
- Could not start the ICS service
- Using the LAN repair function resulted in Failed to query tcp/ip settings for the connection. Cannot proceed
- LAN Support tab contained no data at all.
Fix / Solution
After a period of troubleshooting we noticed that tcpip.sys was missing from our Windows\System32\drivers folder. Once we had identified this we were quickly able to source a copy of the file tcpip.sys and copy it into the above directy.
Once the computer is restarted it should regain all network connectivity.
We have attached a copy of tcpip.sys should you need to replace yours.
NOTE: Attached file (tcpip.sys) is for windows XP only.

I came across this problem last Friday....I was almost stumped until I figured out the TCPIP.sys and IPNAT.sys files were corrupted....I just copied a good version of each of the files on my flash drive, pasted them into the drivers folder and WALAH! Somehow, the TCPIP.sys file was modified last Thursday and I'm still wondering how that happened, but the important thing is everything works FINALLY. Hopefully someone comes across this page because I could have used it, that's for sure.

Well....I am back. The virus in which corrupts the tcpip.sys file is obviously still hiding in my system somewhere....I am pretty sure it is COMCATw.dll.......McAfee busted it a couple times, but it is IMPOSSIBLE to delete. It must be a new virus because if you google it, only one other person has had this problem. It's the root of the tcpip.sys getting corrupted and obviously only strikes once a month. I need to figure this out and fast....this isn't my personal cpu, it's my work cpu, and my whole network is connected to it. AHHHHHHH!

when mcafee detected it did it advise the name of the virus by any chance, we might be able to find a specific removal tool for its strain?

Well, I probably should have wrote it down, but I know the first part of it said, "Spy-" and the file extension was .ba
I've come across a few files in the C:/windows/system32 folder that are mighty suspect....one of them is comcatW.dll and another one is DS32GTV.dll I know this is a type of Vundo virus, google it, and it's pretty serious. It keeps corrupting my tcpip.sys file and I'm not quite sure how to get rid of it....when it corrupts my tcpip file, my internet won't send or receive packets.... |
